CRAYFISH

Murray River Crayfish

While crayfish are considered a food source to both man and aquatic wild life, bass in particular, some species can be a destructive forces to a pond.  They will cause leaks in a dam by building burrows into the dam.  These aquatic pests can be killed by using insecticides in the burrows and sealing the burrows with clay, dirt or sod. However, since most insecticides are toxic to fish this method is not recommended.  Below are three DO-IT-YOUR-SELF treatments handed down from an old timer.  If you use any of these treatments, it is at your own risk.  I personally have not used them, therefore, I cannot attest to their validity.  I have found some of the old remedies to be very effective.

1.Dissolve a dozen mothballs in a gallon of kerosene and then add two gallons of warm water and a tablespoon of detergent.  Place a cup full into each burrow and seal the burrow.

2.Dissolve four ounces of chloride of lime into three quarts of water.  Pour one or two ounces of this solutions into each burrow and seal the burrow.

3.Dissolve eight teaspoons of lye in one gallon of water.  Pure one cup of the solution into each burrow and seal the burrow.
