FISH POND STOCKING

The recommended stocking rate for a one acre pond is as follows:

Bass
For best results Bass should be stocked in July. Stocking a 2" - 2 1/2" Bass in July should give you a 6" to 10" Bass by late fall of the same year.  The stocking rate is 100 per acre pond.

Channel Catfish
Stock at the rate of 200 to 300 per acre pond.  For best results stock when the water temperature is above 50 degrees.  By following this guide line your Channel Catfish will grow at the rate of one inch per month.

Fathead Minnows
Fathead Minnows should be stocked in early Spring along with the Channel Catfish, and the Bluegills.  They are a good food source for the Bass and they will reproduce 25-30 fold.

Grass Carp
Many states have regulations regarding the use of Grass Carp.  You should first check with your County Extension Agent to see if there are any restrictions on the use of Grass Carp in your area.  The normal recommended stocking rate is 12 - 15 per acre pond.  In addition, you should consider a replacement cycle, adding some new ones every few years.  This is suggested because as the Grass Carp mature they feed less and they become ineffective.  Also you will tend to lose some, out the overflow, during heavy rainy periods.

Hybrid Bluegills or Hybrid Redears
The normal recommended rate is 600-800, but you can stock as many as 1000 per acre.  One thing that is very important is to keep at least a 5-1 ratio of Bluegills to Bass.  With proper feeding they will grow to 6 inches in the first year.
